Quevedo LBV 2020 Porto 0.75L
WILD BLACKBERRY, BLACK CHERRY AND COOLING EUCALYPTUS. A SILKY, SINGLE-HARVEST PORT WITH SERIOUS DEPTH.
Late Bottled Vintage occupies a particularly useful place in the Port world.
It offers the concentration and structure of a single harvest, but spends longer maturing before bottling. That extra time allows the tannins to settle down and the wine to become approachable considerably sooner. All the depth, with rather less waiting around.
Quevedo LBV 2020 was produced during a warm, predominantly dry growing season in the Douro. The hot summer accelerated ripening and reduced yields, leaving the remaining grapes concentrated and firmly structured.
Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, preserving freshness while drawing colour, flavour and structure from the fruit. The Port then matured for two and a half years in stainless steel, followed by a further year and a half in a large chestnut tonel. This final period in wood added texture and complexity without taking attention away from the fruit. (quevedo.pt)
Wild blackberry, black cherry and blueberry jam lead the way. Mint, eucalyptus and rockrose provide a cooler, more savoury edge, preventing all that ripe fruit from becoming too pleased with itself.
Silky, fragrant and persistent, this is a proper after-dinner Port. Although waiting until after dinner remains entirely optional.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby in the glass, with an intense and varied aroma.
Wild blackberry, black cherry and blueberry jam provide the fruit, balanced by fresher notes of mint, eucalyptus and aromatic rockrose.
The palate is rich but well controlled, with sweetness held in place by bright acidity. Its tannins are smooth and integrated, giving the wine a silky, velvety texture before a long, fragrant finish.
Producer: Quevedo
Country: Portugal
Region: Douro Valley
Appellation: Porto
Category: Fortified wine
Wine type: Late Bottled Vintage Port
Vintage: 2020
Style: Rich, structured and fruit-driven
Grape varieties: Traditional red Douro varieties; precise blend not stated by the producer
Fermentation: Temperature-controlled fermentation
Fermentation vessel: Stainless-steel vats
Initial ageing: Two and a half years in stainless steel
Wood ageing: One and a half years in a large chestnut tonel
Winemaker: Cláudia Quevedo
Colour: Deep ruby
Alcohol: 19.5% ABV
Total acidity: 4.7g/L
pH: 3.75
Residual sugar: 69g/L
Bottle size: 750ml
The lower residual sugar places it firmly within Quevedo’s characteristically balanced style, with acidity and tannin providing structure rather than allowing sweetness to dominate.
Perfect serve
Serve at 14–16°C in a proper Port glass or small red-wine glass.
It is ready to drink now, but a little air will help the dark fruit, mint and eucalyptus emerge. Pour it shortly before serving or decant it if you notice any sediment in the bottle.
Once opened, reseal it and store it somewhere cool. Unlike Vintage Port, there is no need to gather a small crowd and finish the entire bottle in one sitting.
You may still choose to.
Cocktail serve
LBV Black Velvet
LBV has enough fruit and structure to survive a cocktail, although it deserves one that knows when to keep quiet.
Blackberry liqueur deepens the Port’s dark-fruit character, while lemon brings enough acidity to keep everything moving.
Ingredients
50ml Quevedo LBV 2020 Porto
10ml blackberry liqueur
15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
5ml sugar syrup
Fresh blackberry
Plenty of ice
Method
Add the Port, blackberry liqueur, lemon juice and sugar syrup to a shaker filled with ice.
Shake briefly, then strain into a small rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a blackberry.
Dark, rich and considerably less innocent than the fruit garnish suggests.
Food pairing
Dark chocolate is the obvious place to begin. Its bitterness balances the Port’s sweetness, while the cocoa draws out the darker, more savoury side of the fruit.
Blue cheese works equally well. Something bold and salty will stand up to the wine’s concentration while making its blackberry and cherry flavours appear even more generous.
Quevedo recommends serving its LBV 2020 with chocolate desserts and powerful blue cheeses. It will also work with blackberry tart, flourless chocolate cake, mature hard cheese or a bowl of roasted walnuts.
Or serve it without food and call the Port dessert.
