a small austrian village
A rather large reputation
FROM THE WEINVIERTEL TO THE WORLD
AT HOME IN MICHELIN-STARRED RESTAURANTS ACROSS THE WORLD
Weinrieder’s wines have reached leading restaurants in around 30 countries, with appearances at celebrated addresses including The Fat Duck in England, Piazza Duomo in Italy, Bo Innovation in Hong Kong and Spago in Beverly Hills.
That international following is no accident.
These are wines made for food. Grüner Veltliner brings fruit, spice and freshness to fish, poultry and traditional cuisine. Riesling offers stone fruit, citrus and mineral tension for seafood, aromatic curries and lightly spiced dishes. Chardonnay and Weissburgunder have the texture for roasted poultry, veal, risotto and creamy sauces, while the sweet wines provide a suitably memorable conclusion.
They have the precision sommeliers look for, the personality guests remember and the ageing potential collectors value.
Born in a small Weinviertel village.
Entirely comfortable at the world’s best tables.
Weinrieder comes to our portfolio through an exclusive partnership with the Rieder family, giving us the privilege of representing one of Austria’s most distinctive independent wineries.
Based in Kleinhadersdorf in the northern Weinviertel, the estate produces precise, characterful white wines and some of Austria’s most celebrated sweet wines.
The bottles may begin life in a village of around 500 people, but they have a habit of travelling rather well.
WHY WE CHOSE weinrieder
We look for producers with a clear point of view.
Weinrieder has one in every glass.
Its wines combine concentration with freshness, technical precision with genuine personality and immediate drinking pleasure with serious ageing potential. Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay and Weissburgunder are given the time and attention to express both their variety and the individual vineyards from which they come.
This is also a range with something useful to say at every level. There are bright, approachable wines for the table, structured single-vineyard bottlings, powerful old-vine expressions and rare sweet wines capable of developing for decades.
Our exclusive relationship allows us to tell the whole story: not simply that these are excellent Austrian wines, but why their vineyard origins, family philosophy and remarkable versatility make Weinrieder a natural fit for our portfolio.
Power and character, certainly. Quite a lot of charm, too.
a family estate with its own ideas
The Rieder family’s winemaking story began in 1928, when Franz Rieder exchanged banking for vineyards.
His grandson Fritz took responsibility for the 1979 vintage and recognised that the cool northern Weinviertel offered far more potential than its reputation suggested. He invested in better equipment, more careful vineyard selection and gentler cellar techniques, gradually turning the estate into a producer of internationally recognised dry and sweet wines.
He also gave it a more distinctive name. Rieder was common in the region.Weinrieder was not.
Today, the next generation is helping carry the estate forward. Lukas Rieder refined his craft with Leo Alzinger in the Wachau and Klaus Peter Keller in Rheinhessen before returning home. His brother Bernhard has travelled extensively to introduce the wines to restaurants and customers around the world.
The perspective is international. The roots remain firmly in Kleinhadersdorf.
vineyards with something to say
Weinrieder works with individual sites that bring their own character to the glass.
The lime-rich soils of Ried Kugler give Riesling minerality, structure and longevity. Ried Bockgärten brings freshness and elegance to Chardonnay, while Ried Birthal produces supple, finely balanced Weissburgunder. Ried Schneiderberg combines ripe orchard fruit with bright acidity and a flinty edge.
Ried Hohenleiten sits on a high plateau, where old vines with deep roots produce wines of concentration and impressive ageing potential. Ried Dornleiten was once abandoned before the family carefully restored it, revealing an exceptional site for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
The approach in the cellar is deliberately gentle. Grapes are selected by hand, carefully destemmed and softly pressed. Stainless-steel fermentation protects clarity and freshness, while extended time on the fine lees adds texture and complexity.
The vineyard provides the accent. Weinrieder makes sure it is heard.
the art of
sweet wine
Sweet wine is not a side project here.
Weinrieder has been producing it for more than four decades, harvesting over 150 different Eisweins since 1979. That experience matters because few wines ask more of the people making them—or of the weather.
For Eiswein, grapes must freeze naturally on the vine before being harvested by hand, often in the middle of the night. Climate change has made the necessary cold increasingly rare, narrowing the harvest window and increasing the possibility that an entire vintage may be lost.
When conditions align, the result is extraordinary. Weinrieder’s Beerenauslese and Eiswein combine honeyed richness and concentrated fruit with vivid acidity, creating wines that feel luxurious without becoming heavy.
They can accompany dessert, but are quite capable of being the dessert.
